Do You Expect to Hear God’s Voice

Today’s Reading Numbers 7

Focal Scripture: Numbers 7:89 “When Moses entered the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim. He spoke to him that way.”

Today’s reading reveals something interesting about Moses. When he went into God’s presence he expected to hear from him. He not only heard him but he was going to have a conversation. This was not a one way dialogue but a conversation between two people who knew each other.

Remember Moses was prepared to meet God. He has listened to the commands and expectations. He has performed sacrifices and kept himself clean in God’s eyes. This way he can enter God’s presence and have a deep conversation that benefits both him and the Israelites.

This should teach us a lot about how we should approach God. First, we need to expect to hear from God. This will be from the Bible the majority of the time but our spiritual ears need to be open for another way, especially when we are not hearing him speak. I have learned over the years that God will often get our attention in similar ways when we are having a difficult time. For instance, one of the ways God can get his message across to me is through my wife. God uses her to nudge and sometimes push me in the direction I need to go when I do not see it myself. This usually happens when I get in my own way, though.

I encourage you today to expect to hear from God when you read the Bible and pray. We need to be a people that have a faith like Moses and know when we have communion with our Lord it will not just be a normal occurrence. The word will speak to us and prayer will be a two way conversation.

Tomorrow I plan to read Numbers 8-10
