Today’s Reading 2 Samuel 19-21
Focal Scripture: 20:2 “So all the men of Israel deserted David and followed Sheba son of Bichri, but the men of Judah from the Jordan all the way to Jerusalem remained loyal to their king.”
We all follow someone in our lives. Either we follow good leaders or we follow bad leaders. What separates a good leader from a bad leader is character. At the beginning of this chapter, Sheba is called a wicked man.
What makes a man wicked? Here it was Sheba’s desire to start a rebellion. He was wanting power and authority. He was wanting to be in charge. His leadership convinced many to do a bad thing.
Just because one has influence, followers, or power doesn’t mean they are fit to lead. It has been my experience through the years that the ones who have to tell you they are in charge are not really in charge. They hold a position but not true leadership.
The point for believers is what type of leader are you following. Is it a wicked leader? One who is domineering, has to be in control, or seeks to stir up problems? These leaders often have a loyal following especially with those who think just the way they do. Unfortunately, these leaders are almost always wicked.
Good leaders seek to lift others up. They embrace the uniqueness of those around them and allow them to thrive in their individuality. They are not threatened by different.
I encourage you to find out what type of leader you are. Are you wicked one or a good one? The how and why you lead will answer that question. It’s not about following or success. Many wicked leaders have had large followings and great success.
Good leaders give influence and responsibility away. They showcase the talents of others. They rejoice in success even when it’s not theirs.
Why do you lead? For your glory or the glory of others?
Tomorrow I plan on reading 2 Samuel 22-24
