Leadership Matters

Today’s Reading, Proverbs 27-29

Focal Scripture: Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, people groan.”

Leadership is something we all experience. In my life I have had great leaders and very bad leaders. I have had godly leaders and worldly leaders. I have had leaders who understand people and leaders who try to control everything. Through my experiences I have seen leadership that works and people who pretend to lead.

When good leadership happens people flourish. They are empowered, their opinions matter and they are treated with respect. Even if the person is new or has crazy ideas. This creates an environment where people dare to take risks and enjoy who they are around. People flourish in these environments.

When bad leadership happens the people groan. They don’t want to speak. They don’t want to speak up because they know everything that is said and done will be condemned. This environment creates poor morale and destroys creativity. This leadership may have a small window of success but eventually when bad people rule the groaning will win out.

Leadership matters in companies and in churches. It sets the tone. It also reveals the heart of what the company or church will become. A business will reflect the personality of the leader. A church will begin to act like the pastor. So examine the leadership you’re under. Are people flourishing or are they groaning.

For the believer we must learn how to be great leaders. Why? It demonstrates what we believe about the Bible and the God whom we serve. It shows belief that leadership is a tool for evangelism. It is not a hammer to crush spirits.

Be challenged today to lead biblically. Let individual personalities thrive and show people how they can still go after the main goal. We should be examples on good leadership even when it is difficult.

Tomorrow I plan on reading Proverbs 30-31
