Today’s Reading, Ezekiel 18-20
Focal Scripture: Ezekiel 18:20 “The person who sins is the one who will die. A son won’t suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity, and a father won’t suffer punishment for the son’s iniquity. The righteousness of the righteous person will be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked person will be on him.”
Most people do not own up to their mistakes. Especially if it is a sin they commit. They will shift blame. They will make excuses or even try to tell half truths to make the situation not seem as bad. It is rare to find a person who takes ownership for his mistakes and his sin.
Here in the scripture today we see the foundation of why we need salvation. In the reading God is being very direct on who is responsible for sin. The answer is we as individual sinners. We will not suffer punishment for others (even though their maybe some collateral damage). Personal responsibility makes a big difference.
The opposite is also true. The righteousness we get is also ours individually. This righteousness we get comes from Christ. He paid our penalty and gave us what we could not earn. He suffered for our sins. He gave us a way out. Even though we are responsible for our own sin, Jesus filled the gap.
We are all sinners. We are all responsible for our sins. The question is will you admit that you’re a sinner? Or will you make excuses? When you realize that your sin is yours you are ready to understand what God has done for us on the cross. He took our place and gave us his righteousness.
Even though we are responsible for our own sin, God provided a way out! It has changed everything. Even before the gospel was proclaimed the groundwork was already set.
Hallelujah! What a savior!
