The Word of the Lord is Powerful

Today’s Reading, Jonah 1-4

Focal Scripture: Jonah 3:6 “When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.”

We all know that words have power behind them. They can bring life and they can bring death. We also know that speaking the words of the Lord have more power than anyone can comprehend. So what makes the words powerful? The words themselves do not have power in them. It is the person who speaks those words that give them power.

This is where our reading takes us today. In the book of Jonah we see that he was not very obedient. He did not like the people God called him to preach to in Nineveh. However, the Lord gave him a word to speak. In probably the shortest sermon ever the entire city repented even the King. It wasn’t because of Jonah but the person who sent him.

The application for today is straightforward. We are to trust the word of the Lord and know that it will do its work. Not because we say it, but because the Lord said it. We need to have a trust in the Word of the Lord that is unshakable. This truth will transform us and those around us.

Where do you put your trust? Do you put it into yourself? Or do you trust the words of our King? As a believer we must proclaim “Thus sayeth the Lord.” We must trust that God will fulfill his word. All the pressure is off of us and placed directly on the Lord. If God can use Jonah he can use you to accomplish his purpose.

Have faith in the Lord and his word!

Tomorrow I plan on reading Micah 1-7
