Today’s Reading, Matthew 20-21
Focal Scripture: Matthew 20:26 “It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,”
What makes a great leader? Is it skill? Or maybe it’s the ability to plan for events. Some may think it’s preparing calendars for projects. I have seen some leaders who only serve when they can be seen or when big things happen. However, a great leader serves others when nobody knows.
In the verse today we read that the mother of James and John want her sons to sit at the right and left of Jesus. His response is shocking. He asks them if they are able to drink the cup that he drinks. They respond in the positive and Jesus confirms that they will indeed drink his cup. Then in a quick change he tells his disciples that they do not need to be like the leaders who are tyrants or lord power over people. He wants leaders to be servants.
He is directly addressing the issue of the heart. Good leaders are more concerned about serving and not controlling the environment. Not micromanaging or having everything ran by them. Instead they are different in how they approach leadership.
I have seen both extremes. I have seen leaders who hold power over others. They use it as a weapon. They have to be in control and have to know everything. These leaders have quick success but fizzle out because that pace is not sustainable. I have also seen great examples of servant leaders who know that people matter more than production.
So what is the point of servant leadership? In the ending of this section Jesus tells the disciples. Jesus was here to serve others. He was willing to serve so much he gave his life for others. I encourage you to live like Jesus. Serve those you get along with and serve those who don’t like you.
Leadership is not proven when things are well and everyone is your fan. Leadership is revealed when you’re being attacked and condemned. If you can serve those people in that moment, you are living a life of service.
It is only possible when you submit all you have to Christ. The attitude of leadership reveals how in tune you are with the teaching of Christ.
Do you serve at all times or only when it’s needed? Jesus wants leaders who are always serving.
