Today’s Reading, Matthew 9-10
Focal Scripture: Matthew 10:34 “Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”
We often think that peaceful times are the best times. However, I would argue that the best times are times of difficulty. When you are going through trouble you learn about your character. When things are difficult you find out what type of leader you really are in your setting. When things fall apart you find out how strong your faith is in the Lord.
In the section we are looking at today Jesus tells his disciples that he did not come to bring peace but a sword. This is right after he tells the disciples that if they acknowledge him he will do the same. If they deny him he will also deny them before the Father. What is the meaning behind all of this? Following Christ is difficult and choosing him will not be acceptable to others. Family won’t understand this radical decision. Friends will think you have gone too far. Being a Christian will bring division among others than peace. This topic is often not discussed amongst believers.
So what’s the application today? Count the cost before you follow Christ. Understand it will cost you to follow him completely. You will be disliked and even hated. Especially when you stand up for biblical principles. People will often tell you that you don’t have to be serious or have the convictions you do. They will try to talk you into cultural Christianity.
The challenge for you is to stand firm on biblical convictions. Even when others want you to compromise. This firmness will cause division. Not being like others will have you ostracized. I do want to give a word of caution here. This does not give you the right to be rude or hateful to others who disagree with you. All you’re called to do is be faithful and treat others well.
The calling to Follow Christ is personal and intimate. It is also a witness to others. Even when chaos happens around you it is necessary to have the demeanor of or Savior. Follow his example. Especially when times of distress come because they will.
Peace is nice but following Christ will bring the sword in your life. Be prepared.
