Today’s Reading, 1 Corinthians 15-16
Focal Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:50 “What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can corruption inherit incorruption.”
Getting an inheritance is a weird feeling. On one hand it’s cool to get something from someone that you care about after they pass. On the other hand that means they are no longer with you on this Earth. Whether it is a beloved item, money, or memorabilia receiving an inheritance means something. It means that someone thought of you in advance. It means care and thoughtfulness for a persons future.
In today’s reading Paul tells the church at Corinth that flesh and blood can’t go to heaven. A person must be born again. They must be born of the spirit. Their corruptible bodies can’t inherit incorruption. Paul is making it clear that lives must be changed for people to make it to heaven. They must inherit eternal life. This inheritance has been left to us by Jesus after he died and rose again. He was thinking of us before he died and after he died to give us a better future.
So what does this mean for us today? It means that if you are in Christ you have a future hope. You will be raised to life again. You will have eternal life in heaven. You will inherit the promises of God.
However, if you are in sin and don’t believe the resurrection is real you will not inherit the kingdom. Instead you will inherit death, hell and the grave. You will receive judgement not grace. You will receive separation not togetherness.
Make no doubt we all have an inheritance. It will either come from God or the devil. The difference is those who have an inheritance of goodness will be raised to life. What we believe matters.
