Boast In Your Afflictions

Today’s Reading, Romans 5-7

Focal Scripture: Romans 5:3-4 “And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.”

Affliction is a word I have gotten used to over the last few years. I have had several health complications that have taken a very heavy toll on my body and my mind. On one hand I am healthier than I have been in a very long time. On the other hand I have had to deal with pain, numerous surgeries and procedures, and constant doctor’s visits. I am also thankful it is not worse than it is right now. My afflictions are mild compared to many people who are going through way worse. However, it still wears you down when you see no end in sight.

In today’s reading Paul talks about facing afflictions. These afflictions are a cause for boasting in the Lord. Why? Because they lead to a greater faith. They teach endurance and that endurance leads to greater character. Paul then states that this proven character produces hope. Paul knew firsthand that afflictions are a great teacher. They strip away your ability to glory in yourself. Afflictions reveal areas that God wants complete control over in your life.

I am not sure what afflictions you may be facing today in your life. It could be mental anguish over past sin or hurt you have experienced. Maybe you are facing a constant medical issue that is wearing you down. You could even be facing a terminal illness that you know will claim your life one day. These afflictions are not punishment. They are a way to build you into a believer that can handle many issues. It produces a person who can boldly say they have experienced pain and suffering but God is greater than any problem that will ever face.

I have no idea why I have gone through the afflictions I have the last few years. My prayer is that God will work in me and I will have a deeper faith. A faith that trusts in him when nothing makes sense. A faith that will build in me a stronger character and resolve in the Lord. I honestly don’t know how different my faith is today compared to a few years ago. It is difficult to judge when you are going through afflictions. My desire is to have a holy character. To be a proven believer. I desire to bring glory to my savior.

I hope and pray that you will turn your afflictions into a powerful story of Gods goodness. Trust him and trust the process. He is good in all things and will give you godly character.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Romans 8-10
