Christ Our Mediator

Today’s Reading, Hebrews 7-10

Focal Scripture: Hebrews 9:15 “Therefore, he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called might receive the promise of the eternal inheritance, because a death has taken place for redemption from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.”

Sometimes in life we need a mediator to help us through difficult situations. Especially, if those situations are legal and require a person with extensive knowledge of the law to make sure a fair resolution is reached. Without a mediator a deal will not be able to be reached because one or both of the sides have different views on a topic. I have seen this happen in a few court cases, especially when it deals with money after a loved one’s death. The mediator will examine all of the facts and propose a resolution to the problem.

In today’s reading we find out that Jesus is our mediator. He is the one who has made an arrangement with God about our salvation and our redemption. The writer of Hebrews tells the church that because of this mediation the ones who are called will receive their inheritance. Why? Because Jesus meets the requirement for the penalty under the first covenant. In other words because Jesus died for our sins he and God made a deal on our behalf. His sinless life in exchange for that eternal reward. This way God’s wrath is appeased and sinners are able to be redeemed.

I don’t want us to leave this scene too fast today. Far too often we just say what Christ has done for us, but we don’t mediate on it like we should. So what should we mediate on when we think about Christ death? The answer is profound, God and Jesus made a divine agreement. They knew sin would enter the world. They knew mankind was unable to pay the penalty. So the holy pair agreed that at the right time, Jesus would take flesh on and die for our sins.

This means that any person who puts their faith in Christ is declared innocent. Not because of what we have accomplished but because of what Jesus has accomplished. When the enemy accuses us before God above, our mediator Jesus, tells the father we are declared righteous. That our wrath has been removed because of his sacrifice.

We need to mediate more on the mediation that we have received. It is life changing and life giving. It also shows how much love Christ has for us as people. If you are having struggles today about your worth, know this truth, Christ chose to die for your sins. He believes you are worth saving. He became our mediator to do what nobody else could in creation.

Let us rejoice in the goodness of God.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Hebrews 11-13
