Today’s Reading, Job 29-31
Focal Scripture: Job 31:35-37 “If only I had someone to hear my case! Here is my signature; let the Almighty answer me. Let my Opponent compose his indictment. I would surely carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown. I would give him an account of all my steps; I would approach him like a prince.”
Sometimes people have really good ideas. Other times people make very poor decisions. This passage is one of the latter choices. Job is frustrated over his suffering and loss. However, now he is making accusations against God and telling God he can bring forth to him why he was allowed to suffer. He is confronting God.
On one hand his frustration is understandable. On the other hand he is challenging God and his decision making. Job wants to confront the decision maker and understand the process of his suffering. He is right to be frustrated but his tone is misplaced.
We often do this in our lives. We get frustrated when things don’t go a certain way. We blame God. We get angry and want answers. Just like Job is about to find out we need to remember who we are confronting.
God is holy and sovereign. He owes nobody an explanation for what he does. He can and will do whatever he pleases because he is perfect and just. So when we suffer and have questions our hearts must be right.
The challenge for all of us it so suffer well. To know that God had us right where we need to be, regardless of our circumstances. We can have questions and still not throw out accusations. That is a sign of spiritual maturity.
