Discipleship In Action

Today’s Reading, Exodus 22-24

Focal Scripture: Exodus 24:13 “So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua and went up the mountain of God.”

How do you make disciples? I am of the belief that you can’t just hold to one specific method. For instance, you can’t just spend time with people and expect a person to become a disciple of Christ. On the flip side you can’t just teach people and expect them to become a disciple of the Lord, either. Biblical discipleship happens when you invest time in another person AND teach them biblical truth. It happens when your life mimics the Bible and people see that life lived out in real and powerful ways makes a difference. Discipleship is not passive but active.

In today’s reading we see that Moses is on his way up the mountain to visit with God. This journey was not done solo. Moses traveled with his servant Joshua. On this journey Joshua got to see Moses pray, lead, respond to God, show people mercy and most importantly have a deep personal walk with the Lord. We now know that Joshua was being groomed to lead and it started by following Moses up a mountain. Moses was being a disciple maker.

I can tell you that the best discipleship I have received, has happened when I have done life with someone and was held spiritually accountable. For instance, one of my mentors makes it a constant point of emphasis to challenge me in my evangelism. He asks probing questions and calls me out when I am not living out my calling. He also always encourages me to accomplish things that seem impossible. He believes in my ability. He prays for me earnestly and lets me know about those prayers. We have conversations that bend the ear and touch the heart.

So who are you discipling today? I challenge you today to find someone to disciple. Invest in their lives and pour into their hearts. Expect nothing in return except knowing you’re being biblically obedient. I also challenge you to be discipled. Have someone in your life that will pour into you and show you how to live biblically. A person who will challenge you spiritually and mentally. A person who builds you up in front of the Lord and others.

Also be a person who will follow another person up a mountain. Learn everything you can and apply it in on your life. You never know what the Lord is preparing you to accomplish for him in the future. Every moment matter when it comes to discipleship.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Exodus 25-27
