Do You Thirst for the Lord?

Today’s Reading, Psalms 58-65

Focal Scripture: Psalms 63:1 “God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you. I thirst for you; my body faints for you in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water.”

Have you ever been extremely thirsty? I have been several times in my life, especially during football practice when I was a teenager. I remember one event where we were having our third practice in the same day. It was hot and miserable. All of us were thirsty and exhausted. The desire for water was intense. I longed for it more than anything else in my life at that moment. Then I finally got it and it met a need that was void.

In today’s reading David explains just how much he is desperate for the Lord. He explains how he is eagerly seeking him. He compares his desire to searching for the Lord as one who is looking to get a drink of water. However, David uses even more descriptive language in this Psalm. He declares that his body is fainting for the Lord in a place that is dry and desolate. The duality here is piercing because David is stating that even though he needed physical water he desired the Lord even more.

So the obvious question must be asked about us as well. Do we desire the Lord more than anything else in our lives? Obviously we need to have our needs met and take care of ourselves physically. We will have desires outside of our faith journey. However, are we desperate for the Lord above all of those desires?

We can examine this truth by asking a few questions.

  1. Do you have a desire to know God on a deeper level? If so explain what exactly you are wanting to know.
  2. If you have holes in your faith are you filling them up with Christ or something else?
  3. Are you willing to do whatever the Lord tells you, when he tells you?

These quick questions can help you see if you are thirsting for the Lord in a biblical way. I challenge you today to have a desire for God that is bigger than your biggest dream or goal. Pursue Jesus in such a way that it makes other people uncomfortable. Be great in your pursuit of holiness and deep relationship with God. Want it more than water on a hot day.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Psalms 66-69
