Doing Right By Others Even When They Don’t Deserve It

Today’s Reading 1 Samuel 21-24

Focal Scripture: 1 Samuel 24:17 “Then Saul wept aloud and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have done what is good to me though I have done what is evil to you.”

When you are being hunted down it wears on your soul. David has done the right thing at every opportunity. He has served faithfully, done what is asked, and helped those who wish him harm. David even gets advice that is contrary to what he desires to do, kill the king.

David demonstrates great restraint and respect to Saul. David has the opportunity to destroy his enemy. He could have ended the threat but he chose to honor God instead. David then explains to Saul he could have taken is life. Then Saul realizes that David is the right choice to lead the people. David’s character is inspiring to witness.

I am not sure if you have been in a position where people are actively trying to destroy you. If you have, you know what it is like. You know the stress it can cause, the sleepless nights, and asking yourself why. It is even worse when it comes from people you know and thought you could trust.

The application for today is to be like David and not to seek vengeance or destruction of others. Even though you would be justified to defend yourself and end the threat. By showing restraint and mercy you demonstrate godly character for others to see. You demonstrate mercy to those who need it most.

It can be difficult to not react and respond to attacks. However, as believers our job is to demonstrate Christs attitude towards this who wish to harm us. This is something I have walked through personally. I know what it is like when people actively oppose you and desire your fall. Even when you are doing exactly what God has asked you to do.

Be faithful and demonstrate restraint. Being like your enemies is not biblical or right. Be different and pursue faithfulness above all.

Tomorrow I plan on reading 1 Samuel 25-27
