Today’s Reading, Deuteronomy 11-13
Focal Scripture: Deuteronomy 12:8 “You are not to do as we are doing here today; everyone is doing whatever seems right in his own sight.”
Have you ever meet someone who can do no wrong? Every time you have a conversation with them they are complaining about other people. They even get upset because people are not following their lead and doing exactly what they say. Then in conversations they will even say “If you would just do what I say, everything would be better.” People like this don’t admit mistakes and they believe they have all the answers. People like this are difficult to be around.
In today’s reading God points out that people are doing whatever seems right in their own eyes. They are making decisions based off of their own wisdom and morality. The nation was setting the standard instead of looking at God for the standard. When that happens a nation and a people are very much in trouble.
As was mentioned earlier there are people who think everything they do is right. They make excuses for bad behavior and sin. They never really apologize for their mistakes because they believe they are never wrong. They have decided that their thoughts, actions, and desires are elevated above God. This reveals a heart that doesn’t understand the human condition and misses the gospel.
Our challenge as believers is to make sure we humble ourselves before God and admit our ways are not the best ways. Our human condition is broken. We must be a people that relies on God and his standard for our lives. We can’t justify our behavior. We have to be a people that acknowledges our brokenness and that God’s standard is best.
I pray today that your standard is higher than your opinion. I want you to have a biblical view of your opinion and of your actions. The Bible should reveal to us our inadequacies. Thankfully, we have a solution. His name is Jesus.
