Today’s Reading, John 19-21
Focal Scripture: John 21:19 “He said this to indicate by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. After saying this, he told him, “Follow me.”
Following the Lord is one of the greatest callings and privileges a person can have in their life. To follow him means we will travel the same road he travels. It means we will go the same places he goes, no matter what it looks like to us as a human. Following the Lord is a decision that can’t be made lightly. It is also a decision that has life long impacts.
In today’s reading Jesus tells Peter to “Follow Me” twice in conversation. First, when he tells Peter to feed his sheep, he ends the conversation by telling him he will suffer a martyrs death and to follow him anyway. Then later Peter asks Jesus about John and if he would not die. Jesus told Peter “what if I want him to remain until I come?” Then Jesus tells Peter to “Follow Me” again. Jesus was more concerned about Peter’s personal choice than what was happening with others.
The same is true for you and me. We are called to follow the Lord. Our allegiance is not to a political party. It is not to a church. It is not even to family. The person we look to in our faith is Christ alone. He is the one we follow. Practically speaking if Jesus leads us to another job, we must obey. If he leads us to another vocation we must follow. Even if he leads us to a place that is unsafe and might lead to our death, we must follow.
Take notice that if you are feeling lead to violate scripture that is not biblical. You aren’t following Jesus, you are following your self or even worse the devil himself. I challenge you today to follow the Lord regardless of what it will cost you. Follow the Lord even if others around you do not want to make that decision.
Following him is a bold decision. It will make you look different. It will even put a target on your back. Especially by religious people who refuse to follow him with passion and dedication. If we want to see a true revival take place, personally and in our country. We need men and women who will decide to follow the Lord, always.
Are you that person?
Tomorrow, I plan on reading Acts 1-3
