His Power Gives Us What We Need

Today’s Reading, 2 Peter 1-3

Focal Scripture: 2 Peter 1:3 “His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

Over the past year and half I have learned how to fuel my body for power and not just to satisfy a need. This process has not always been easy because I have had to unlearn some very bad habits. For instance, I have had to unlearn eating larger meals and portions. I was unaware of how much food most people consume at one meal. Many meals that are eaten in the US have more calories than a person should eat in an entire day. Most of that food doesn’t even give the body power to make it through the day. Lack of power keeps us from accomplishing our goals with our bodies.

In today’s reading Peter lets his readers know that the Lord’s power has given them everything to live a life of godliness. That power comes through knowledge of the Lord. Peter can speak to this firsthand because he was a fisherman who was not classically trained. However, because he knew and spent time with Jesus he learned how to tap into the power of God through the Holy Spirit. Peter knows what it is to be called by God and do things that are not humanly possible.

I want to encourage you today to rely and rest in the power of God. This power allows us to do things that are not possible, like loving our enemies. Nobody would purposely love and pray for people who have hurt them and wronged them. Our natural reaction is to want them to be punished and experience the same type of struggle and pain. However, by the power of God you cannot only pray for them, you can love them biblically.

I can’t speak for you but I know I am guilty of trying to live the Christian walk in my own strength. Every time I do, I fail, and fail miserably. I am learning the art of surrender. I am learning how to get power from God instead of my own ability. It is not easy because my entire life I have been trained to be independent. That is not biblical in our faith walk. Our faith journey demands that we are dependent upon the Lord.

So I challenge you today to live in the power of the Lord. He has given us everything we need to do the impossible. Think of what would happen in our homes and churches if we rested and lived in God’s power.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading 1 John 1-5
