How To Treat the Poor Biblically

Today’s Reading, Deuteronomy 14-16

Focal Scripture: Deuteronomy 15:8 “Instead, you are to open your hand to him and freely loan him enough for whatever need he has.”

How we treat others matters. How we treat the poor matters a great deal also. In my life I have had the privilege of learning from kind hearted men and women how to treat those who have nothing. Being transparent with you, I thought I understood what being homeless and poor was and I had very specific thoughts about people in those situations. Thankfully, my worldview and understanding were rocked to have a more biblical heart.

In today’s reading, God is giving clear directions on how to handle the poor in the Israelite community. When someone is in need that need should be met. Even if that need comes at the time that all debt is to be forgiven. Why? Because taking care of those in need is always the right thing to do.

Poor people and homeless people deserve to be loved. They also deserved to be looked after in a way that is uncomfortable to most. Is there a chance you could be getting dupped? Absolutely! However, our job is to give not because we investigate but to give because people deserve to know they matter.

I can tell you from personal experiences that the poor around us are worthy of respect and love. Ministering to them was one of my greatest blessings. Walking alongside others who loved strangers unconditionally taught me grace and mercy. It taught me to not judge a book by its cover. It also taught me how to get away from what culture expects and treat the poor biblically.

How does one do that? By humbling yourself and trusting that the Lord is the one in charge. And trusting that the abundance you have been given is the perfect amount to bless those who are in need. Always looking for ways to minister to others. So the original question must be answered. How do you treat the poor amongst you? Do you give with a grateful heart or do you judge them. The Bible tells us to take care of these people. If they are not telling the truth God will take care of that in the end. Our job is to love others even when it doesn’t make sense.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Deuteronomy 17-20
