Today’s Reading, 2 Samuel 19-21
Focal Scripture: 2 Samuel 19:7 “Now get up! Go out and encourage your soldiers, for I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a man will remain with you tonight. This will be worse for you than all the trouble that has come to you from your youth until now!”
We all need to be corrected in our lives. Having people in your life who have the ability and right to correct you is necessary to grow as a person and a believer. I have about four men that are friends and mentors that will correct me if they notice anything in my life that goes against biblical standards. These conversations are not always pleasant but I am grateful for them. Often it is nothing major but issues they see that could cause damage to me, my reputation, family, or church.
In today’s reading David is understandably upset after the loss of his son. The problem is that his soldiers did the right thing by going to war. They did right by defending David. However, now David is in isolation and neglecting his dutiful warriors. In a great word of advise he is told to quit being down and go out and encourage the men who have fought for him. This simple encouragement is all that was needed for the men to get back to focusing on what is good and right. However, David had to be placed on the right track.
The challenge for us today is that many people do not have people in their life who hold them accountable. When this takes place the human condition will take advantage of this lawlessness. So what can we do? We must be around people who love us enough to want the best from us personally and spiritually.
David was confronted as King. It was obvious he was about to lose the people. That took courage to confront knowing it could bring death. However, the risk was worth it because the King needed to lead his people. I encourage you to pick your friends wisely. Listen to Godly correction and don’t listen to those who do not have your best interest at heart.
If you don’t like Godly correction it is time to check your heart. Notice how I said Godly correction. I can tell you from experience that not every correction is good and definitely not Godly. Some people just look to destroy. This is why the people you have around you matters. Pick carefully and listen to their words of wisdom.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading 2 Samuel 22-24
