Remember and Grasp God’s Works

Today’s Reading, Psalms 106-107

Focal Scripture: Psalms 106:6 “Our ancestors in Egypt did not grasp the significance of your wondrous works or remember your many acts of faithful love; instead, they rebelled by the sea — the Red Sea.”

I have learned that we as people have fickle memories. There are times we can remember details about both good and negative events we experience. These events often shape our worldview and how we treat other people. They also impact our faith journey when it comes to our belief system. When things go wrong we often blame God or circumstances. When things go well, we give God a quick acknowledgment then it becomes about us and what we have done.

In today’s reading we get a recap on how the children of Israel thought and responded to the works of God. It states that the ancestors who were in Egypt lost the memory of what God did for them. They don’t see the significance behind how God moved and why he moved in their life. Instead they rebelled against God and did not believe he would do what he already demonstrated he was capable of accomplishing. Their memory was short term and focused on their situation.

The challenge that believers have is not that much different. Too often we forget how God has moved and worked in our lives. We get so caught up in the moment that our memories become clouded. If you are facing a problem right now your initial response is to focus on what you see immediately. However, as believers we should look to what God has already done and how he moved in our lives.

Obviously we won’t know how he will work this time around but we do know that he will work. Whenever we are facing problems and heartache, troubles and fear, we need to trust that God is working. We don’t need to rebel like the children of Israel and wish to go back to bondage.

Unfortunately, that is what many of us do when we have struggles. The challenge we all have today is to remember what God has done because it reveals his character. This means we must trust his process. This means that our hearts have to remember accurately how God works and how he delivers.

This is why I am a fan of journaling. We need to remember God’s works in our lives because when life gets difficult we know he will deliver us in his ways. We need to remember the works of God.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Psalms 108-114
