Today’s Reading, 2 Chronicles 21-24
Focal Scripture: 2 Chronicles 24:19 “Nevertheless, he sent them prophets to bring them back to the Lord; they admonished them, but the people would not listen.”
It is not always easy to have very difficult conversations with people. Especially if you know them on a personal level. I have learned over the years that people will tell you that they want to be told the truth but when it happens they will often get upset or not want the accountability. It also applies when you confront people with sin that must be addressed. Especially those who are in a position of leadership.
In today’s reading we see that the Lord sent the people of Israel prophets to have them return to the Lord. They heard the truth but then the people would not listen. Imagine knowing the power of the Lord in their context. Witnessing miracles and worshipping God through animal sacrifices. Hearing from his prophet about his expectations for your life. Then in an act of rebellion choosing not to listen.
We have to be careful with the application in these verses. I have learned that some people will take this verse and say “See, I can say whatever I want and how I want.” However, that is not what happens here. The prophets are speaking exactly what God decrees. They are a spokesman for his standard and his glory.
What does this teach us as believers? It means when we have conversations or confront others over sin it must be biblically based. It must come from scripture and not our opinion. It must come from Gods heart of reconciliation not punishment. I hope today that you feel empowered to confront sin in others but also fear and trepidation that you will speak for yourself and not God.
If people choose not to listen to what we say that is ok. If people reject biblical truth then they will be held accountable. Our job is to stay biblical and speak Gods word to individuals and the masses.
Are you willing to speak Gods truth even if you are not listened to? It will reveal who you believe has the power in conversation.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading 2 Chronicles 25-27
