The Lord Who Rescues

Today’s Reading, Psalms 66-69

Focal Scripture: Psalms 69:14 “Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep water.”

Being stuck in mud is a unique experience. On one of our first dates I accompanied my wife as she was looking for a vehicle. She was test driving an FJ cruiser. The salesman told us to take it to an off road course in the mud. We both looked at one another as we could tell the mud was pretty thick. He insisted, so she went and guess what? We got stuck in mud all the way to the window. It was so much we had to crawl out the window because the door would not open. We were in mud and we sunk.

In today’s reading David is praying to God to be delivered from the mud and to not sink when he got in a muddy situation. David needed rescue from people and from deep water. He was overwhelmed and in over his head. The problem was too big for him to handle on his own. Thankfully, he knew where he needed to look for help. He knew that God was his rescue.

Today you may be facing a situation where you are overwhelmed. You are sinking in mud and the waters are at your neck. My advice is for you to give up and give God control. You need someone more powerful and wise to help you out of your circumstances. You need a rescuer who doesn’t need to be rescued.

I understand how easy it is to try and fix problems yourself. That is one of my biggest struggles. I believe I have all of the solutions and I know what is needed. However, letting go and trusting God to come to my rescue you is liberating. You no longer have to fight and push yourself to hold on to the situation. When you ask for a rescue God shows up at just the right time and in just the right way.

My challenge to you and myself today is to trust the Lord to rescue us from our situation. For that to happen we must give up our control and trust him to do what only he can do. Biblical rescue is trusting a holy God to do a holy work. It is belief that God works on our behalf for his good.

So what do you need rescue from today? I encourage you to surrender and ask for help. God will respond.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Psalms 70-73
