The One Who Was Pierced

Today’s Reading, Zechariah 8-14

Focal Scripture: Zechariah 12:10 ““Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at me whom they pierced. They will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for him as one weeps for a firstborn.”

Knowing you will be corrected is never easy. It is not easy because you have to admit you are wrong and nobody likes to do that willingly. Right now as a family we have dealt with a situation where we knew we were correct on a topic. Unfortunately, some people we were discussing this situation with didn’t see it that way. Thankfully after some persistence a correction was finally initiated and a resolution came to pass. People had to admit they were wrong and that was the root of the problem.

In today’s reading we see that the spirit of the Lord will be poured out onto Jerusalem. Then they will look at the one they have pierced. Jerusalem will mourn for him and weep bitterly that they treated him the way they have. Why does this matter? Because the Jewish people will acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ, the one they pierced. They will admit that Jesus is the promised Messiah. They will finally understand the savior has been among them and he is the one who saves the souls of people.

When this happens the Jewish people will mourn because they have spent so much time fighting against the promise they have been looking for since the beginning. We know that Jesus was pierced to save sinners. He was pierced to fulfill prophecy. He was pierced so blood could flow from his body and redeem sinners of their guilt. Jesus was pierced as the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.

Right now many Jewish people don’t believe that Jesus is the Messiah. They are blinded because of their unbelief. However, they can still come to a saving faith. You can also come to a saving faith. Jesus fulfills prophecy. Jesus is the one who changes all lives both Jew and Gentile. Jesus is God in the flesh. He is the savior of the world. I urge you today to put your hope in the one who defeated death and gives eternal life. One day the nation of Israel will realize who he has always been. One day you will see him as he has always been.

Today is the day of salvation. Today is the day to receive eternal life.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Malachi 1-4
