The Timing of Love

Today’s Reading, Song of Songs 1-8

Focal Scripture: Song of Songs 2:7 “Young women of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and the wild does of the field, do not stir up or awaken love until the appropriate time.”

Love is important. It is so important that in the Song of Songs it is stated three different times to not awaken love until the appropriate time. Why is that? Because love is a powerful emotion. It can take us places we don’t want to go but can also take us places we need to go.

Here in this book this advice is given to protect themselves from any feelings or emotions that could cause them to go down a path that will awaken love. Love is intended to be special. Especially romantic love. It can be stirred up and wreck havoc if you’re not careful.

For the believer the application is two fold. If you are single you need to be careful how you date. Protect your heart and don’t awaken the passion of love before it is time. Your heart is sensitive and only needs to be awakened when the time or right. Because once it starts that door will not close.

For the ones who are married you need to guard your hear and not seek love elsewhere. If you are not careful you can awaken love or believe your true love has waned. These feelings can and will take you to a place that will lead to pain and destruction. These emotions are powerful and once they get started they are almost impossible to turn off. So guard your hearts and adore the one you love. Don’t look elsewhere for what belongs to someone else.

Relationships matter. God honoring relationships change hearts and homes. They also build the church. Awaken love at the right time and hold onto what you have.

Tomorrow I plan on reading Isaiah 1-4
