Today’s Reading, 2 Kings 6-8
Focal Scripture: 2 Kings 6:17 “Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
We often go through life and don’t think about many serious topics. Not because we are not curious about them but because they are not right in our face. Take for instance the way our heart works. God designed it to work in a manner that is efficient and powerful. However, we don’t give it much thought until the heart has a problem or someone we know is going through major surgery. It’s not that the heart isn’t important to us but that that we just trust the process.
In today’s reading war is at the door for the Jewish people. One of the servants saw the mass of people that surrounded them. He was overwhelmed and ran to tell Elisha. Elisha’s response is amazing. He prayed that the servants eyes would be opened. Once they were he saw a heavenly host surrounding them. They were on fire and ready for battle. The Lord was at work in mighty ways even though everyone couldn’t see it directly.
The question I wonder is could Elisha see this spiritual battle all the time or just this instance. Either way he knew a battle was taking place that was beyond human eyes. This story should remind us that our battle is never just a physical one, it is a spiritual one. We just don’t have the eyes to see what is taking place around us in the heavens.
Our challenge as believers is to understand that the spiritual world is real. We know that it is but because it is not in our face all the time we often don’t give it much thought. To be hones it is probably a good thing we can’t see what happens behind the scenes. Human war has nothing on spiritual war. It is the battle between good and evil. Between heaven and hell. Between life and death.
So today we need to thank the Lord for fighting battles in our behalf that we may not even know are taking place. This fact should bring us to worship in mighty and powerful ways. We should be grateful he fights on our behalf. Take some time to reflect and be happy that our God intel and merciful. Let us also be thankful he fights battles we often don’t know about in our lives.
