Today’s Reading, Matthew 1-4
Focal Scripture: Matthew 4:17 “From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
Being misrepresented is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a person. When others create a false narrative because they don’t like the truth it exposes the condition of their heart. I know of a situation where this happened and the false narrative has now become the truth. This misrepresentation creates a problem because when people don’t know the entire situation they make up the in between. This gap causes unethical people to take advantage of those who are not deeply involved. Half truths are complete lies.
In today’s reading we need to notice a truth about the message of Jesus. It says that after his baptism and his temptation that he gave a singular message. The text tells us from the time his ministry in Galilee started he preached “Repent, because the Kingdom of heaven has come near.” Jesus message has always been repentance. Yes, he loves people. Yes, he was gracious and kind. However, his message was to tell others they needed to repent from their sin. He is not ok with people living like the world.
So what about you? What do you believe about the message of Jesus? I know many people who declare that Jesus is not judgmental. They say he accepts everyone into heaven no matter what they believe or how they live. This verse tells us that his message was about repentance. He declared that if you want the kingdom then you must live differently. The difference is a recognition that your sin has offended a holy God.
When we speak with people we have to speak in ways they can understand. We need to teach theology and we need to give them depth. However, we must also give them clear biblical guidance that repentance is the only way to heaven.
How about you? Have you repented of your sins? Have you told others that repentance is the only way to have sins forgiven? Jesus did and if that was his message it should also be our message. Why? Because repentance means a turning away from sin and a running towards perfection.
It is time we declare the message of Jesus not the message that makes us palatable to others. Jesus message is about a heart change that leads to life change.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading Matthew 5-6
