Do You Control Your Temper or Does It Control You?

Today’s Reading, Proverbs 25-26

Focal Scripture: Proverbs 25:28 “A person who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down.”

Most people do not know this about me but I used to have a very bad temper. I could control it for a little while but when I got pushed to far my temper controlled me, it almost always lead to very dangerous situations. I remember one situation where my temper got the better of me and it scared me afterwards. At this point in my life I was a young teenager and still growing in my faith. I realized that if I did not submit this to the Lord it was going to consume me and ruin my life.

In today’s reading we see that a person who can’t control their temper is like a city that has a broken wall. What exactly does that mean? In biblical times most cities had walls that protected them from enemies. These walls protected them from attacks and even gave the residents a sense of security. For a person who has a temper they are exposed. Being that exposed can cause a person to be destroyed. One hot headed moment can ruin a persons reputation and character.

I am not sure if you have a problem controlling your temper but if you do it needs to be submitted to the Lord. I can tell you from personal experience that this submission will take work and a humble spirit. I know in my life when I finally submitted this to God it fundamentally changed my personality. I went from being angry all the time to being submissive to God. I went from thinking about retribution towards others to seeing them as someone who needs a touch from the Lord.

I challenge you today to not allow your temper to be part of your personality or your life. An angry spirit is not from the Lord. An angry spirit either reveals an immature spiritual life or a person who is not a genuine believer. Either way this has to be dealt with because a temper that is uncontrolled leads to a life that is uncontrolled.

So do you control your temper or does it control you? That answer will revel the health of your spiritual walk.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Proverbs 27-29
