Today’s Reading, Ecclesiastes 7-12
Focal Scripture: Ecclesiastes 8:14 “There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.”
Today’s verse strikes a deep cord in me. I have a strong sense of justice. I want things to be done accurately and fairly. I long for people to be treated correctly. When people are done wrong or spoken ill of I often speak up for them. I get very frustrated when the evil get away with sin and the righteous suffer. It doesn’t matter if it happens to others or even myself.
In today’s reading Solomon states the obvious. Sometimes the righteous get what the wicked deserve and the wicked get what rhe righteous deserve. This frustrates Solomon because he believes it is futile. Futility can bring frustration. Futility can bring a sense of giving up and not putting in lots of effort.
The challenge that we have as believers is to make sure we don’t let results dictate our feelings or our response. Sometimes in life bad things happen to good people. Then sometimes in life bad people get rewarded. It doesn’t matter not seem fair or just to anyone. However, it means we must trust the Lord and how he works.
When these bad things happen we must rely on God’s sovereignty. This is the belief and trust that God does what he wants when he wants. He answers to nobody. He is perfect in what he does and even in what he allows. We must trust the creator of the u oversee.
I hope today you don’t allow futility to guide your life. Trust the Lord and trust his process.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading 1 Kings 10-11 & 2 Chronicles 9
