Today’s Reading, Song of Songs 1-8
Focal Scripture: Song of Songs 2:2 “Like a lily among thorns, so is my darling among the young women.”
Whom you pick to date has a major impact on your life. Whom you pick to marry can bring you peace or it could bring you destruction and it is the biggest decision you will ever make in your personal life. Why is it such a big deal? Because your spouse is your sounding board. They are your best friend. They are the person who will see you at your worst and at your best. Your spouse will be the parent to your children. This relationship will play a major role in your faith as well.
In today’s reading we see a very good description of what his woman is like according to the young man in Song of Songs. He says she is like a lily among the thorns. What does this mean? It means that the woman he is in love with is beautiful even among the ugliness of thorns. It also means that his lady can survive and thrive in extremely harsh conditions. She is unique and she is special. He sees her value and her worth.
I can tell you from my personal experience that I am married to a lily amongst the thorns. My bride is special and she has a love for Jesus that runs deep. She has compassion for others that is unequaled by other humans. My wife knows truth and can see through peoples deception.
She also hold me to account. She is the physical embodiment of the Holy Spirit in my life. She points out my sins and then expects me to deal with them. She lets me know when I am lacking in my godly responsibilities. At times it is painful but it is always needed.
I don’t say these things to make her sound harsh but to point out that her beauty, physically and spiritually, sticks out amongst the ugliness and pain of this world. This is why who you date and marry matters.
Will you be with someone that is at odds with you and what God has called you to do? Or will you be with someone that can show biblical beauty in difficult situations? This decision will have a major impact on your life. Never settle and never give in to the expectations of the world.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading Proverbs 1-3
