The Scripture
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Phil 2:4)
Why we should serve?
As people we have a tendency to look out for ourselves above everyone else. We have a since of self preservation. The Bible tells us that we should not just look out for ourselves but also for others. So what does that mean? It means that believers must stop seeing the church as a building and start seeing it as a group of people with a common goal. That goal is to spread the gospel and serve others.
To serve others means that we must spend time with others. We can’t be people who are always isolated from those around us. I am by nature an introvert. Being around large crowds and groups is very stressful for me. Going out and serving others is not in my comfort zone but I have learned that is one of the greatest ways to spread the Gospel.
The Theological Solution
Many times we believe that the church is a building. However, the Bible is clear that the church is not a building but made of believers. The church is wherever believers are located. The early church was not concerned about a building. They were concerned about other people. Obviously, we have to take care of ourselves or we will not be good for anyone. Christians should look out for those in our circles. If we are going to be Christ followers and serve we must have the mind of Christ. Therefore, we must be constantly looking for ways to serve others and meet their needs wether it is physically or spiritually.
The Application
Do you see others as Christ sees them? Or is it all about you? If we are going to see a true change in our culture the two ways of living that must take place are serving others and sharing the Gospel. The early church did both well and the fruit of their labors was evident. Do people know that you are a disciple of Christ by how you serve and share the gospel?
