Obedience Matters

Today’s Reading 2 Kings 4-5

Focal Scripture: 2 Kings 4:5 “So she left. After she had shut the door behind her and her sons, they kept bringing her containers, and she kept pouring.”

Here we see a woman who was in desperate need of help. She did not know what to do or where to turn. Elisha the prophet told her to get containers and fill them with oil. Without hesitation her and her sons obeyed and for as many containers as possible.

In this miracle God allowed for the oil to be replicated to meet a need. She filled up all the containers, sold them and was able to pay off her debt. She was just faithful to the commands of Gods prophet. She was obedient to God’s man.

The application for the believer her is obedience to God’s command. I want to stress here that this is not blind obedience to a person. Whether a pastor, boss, or another person. This is obedience to Elisha who is speaking on behalf of the Lord.

Too often people expect blind obedience from others. No questions asked. They believe their commands or suggestions should be elevated up to Gods commands. If you don’t follow them than your a trouble maker.

I bring this up because the woman mentioned is following the commands of the prophet. In her obedience God performs a miracle. Elisha is not the object of the miracle God is, because he performed it to meet a need.

The big takeaway is to listen to God speak. Don’t delay in obedience and watch God show up to meet needs. Obey him first.

Tomorrow I plan on reading 2 Kings 6-8
