Today’s Reading, Jeremiah 35-37
Focal Scripture: 36:23 “As soon as Jehudi would read three or four columns, Jehoiakim would cut the scroll with a scribe’s knife and throw the columns into the fire in the hearth until the entire scroll was consumed by the fire in the hearth.”
Reading the word of the Lord makes a big difference in our lives and those around us. Unfortunately, many people say they want to be serious about reading the words from the Lord until they start reading. When they start reading they realize it requires much to do what is says.
This is where we find ourselves today. Jeremiah dictated a scroll that has the word of God written on it. However, when the king heard the word he would cut part of the scroll and burn it in the hearth. Why you ask? The words were not favorable and talked about judgement. They were hard to swallow. The Lord has a standard and that standard was being rejected.
We see this today. Not really from the unsaved but from the religious. Too often the religious people will make excuses about Bible reading. They will say it’s to difficult or I don’t have the time. The topics are over people’s heads. The Bible isn’t meant to be studied or investigated. Or my personal favorite, “You are expecting to much from people.”
What is the application for today? It is to take the word of the Lord serious. It is to know it and stop making excuses for not knowing it well. People learn difficult topics everyday. Spend hours training for a job. Yet, Bible reading is to difficult.
Are you a person who values the word of the Lord? Or do you try to burn it because you don’t like it? It might not be a physical destruction but are you spiritually destroying what is a good practice?
How we view the word of the Lord matters. It affects our theology and our worldview. Let us not be a people who hate the word of the Lord. Let us be a people who is passionate about it daily.
Tomorrow I plan on reading Jeremiah 38-41
