Nothing Hidden

Today’s Reading, Luke 12-13

Focal Scripture: Luke 12:3 “Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.”

Secrets are really never a good idea. Yes, there are times when things need to stay confidential. Especially when you’re struggling with personal events in your life. What I am talking about are truths that need to be disclosed but are kept under wraps to protect a person or an institution. This will create division and a lack of trust.

In today’s focal verse we see that Jesus is talking about the hypocrisy of the religious. This sin of expecting one thing from others but not following through with that same standard on their end would be their undoing. He calls them out and lets them know that the things said in secret will be exposed. Then what they said in private will be proclaimed on the rooftops.

What is the meaning behind this verse. The meaning is that people say one thing and do another. They speak in private and keep the truth from public. When truth is hidden it is hypocrisy. This often causes trouble because people are aware something is amiss but nobody is honest about the problem.

I have seen this in environments where people’s sin are covered up. Everyone knows their behavior is unbiblical. A history of abuse has been reported but instead of addressing it excuses get made. This hypocrisy causes a lack of credibility amongst leaders.

The correlation here can’t be missed. Just as Jesus calls out the religious in this setting he also calls out the religious today. You can’t be a person who claims biblical truth but hides the truth from others. Organizations and churches who do this put forth an attitude of dishonesty.

The solution is to be honest. To work towards a goal of not being hypocritical. Not saying one thing but doing another. Don’t hide the truth. Because the truth will always find its way out. If it comes out another way the person or the group will be seen as hypocritical.

Be different. Don’t hide the truth like the hypocritical religious elites.

Tomorrow I plan on reading Luke 14-16
