Today’s Reading, Psalms 133-139
Focal Scripture: Psalms 139:16 “Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.”
If we knew what was to take place in the future how would that affect our decisions. Would we make choices to avoid pain? Would we make choices for our benefit alone or the benefit of others? These are interesting questions to consider but we must trust that God had our plans mapped out before we were even born. I know one question that I am struggling with right now is why did God provide a house for us where we currently live knowing what would take place in our lives. We are thankful for our home but now our lives are somewhere else and it makes life challenging at times.
In today’s reading I know that I don’t need to focus on the reasons for this in our life. He knew before I was even formed that this would happen. He knew every step I would take and this was part of his plan. God was not shocked or dismayed by the circumstances that we face as a family. Our lives were planned and written down in his book. A book of detail and book that demonstrates his ways are good and perfect. Even when we don’t understand.
I know that some people here will be stressed because they believe they have no choice in life. However, these verses are two fold. He knew how and when we would be created. He also knows what we will do and how things will go for us in our lives. If he doesn’t then he is not an all knowing God. He is limited and is no God at all. Just because he knows our futures doesn’t mean we don’t have personal responsibility.
This truth should actually challenge us to know God on a more intimate and personal level. It should push us to make sure we are living a life that is pleasing to the King of the universe.
So the challenge this poses for you and for me is this, since we know God is aware of our future and our days have been planned. Are we giving God our all mentally, physically, and spiritually? We can’t bring excuses to him with our life. He knows what is happening and he knows why we make the choices that we do in our lives.
We can’t hide from him because he knows us intimately. Then because he knows our future it doesn’t negate our own personal responsibility. I know this topic can cause stress for many people because they say “if my days are already planned, what’s the point.” I believe that this shows us that we worship a God who is above all and the choice is ours to worship him or resist him.
So I challenge you today to trust in God’s sovereignty. Trust that he knows us and knows our future. Trust that he will allow you to make the choices you need to make in your life. Then trust him with your future by submitting to the one who created you to begin with from the foundation of the world.
