Today’s Reading, Ecclesiastes 1-4
Focal Scripture: Ecclesiastes 2:22 “For what does a person get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun?”
Work, sometimes you love it and sometimes you abhor it passionately. I have been places where I liked my job but loved the people I was around more. Then I have been places where I have loved my job and not been a fan of my coworkers. I have also been places that demanded all of your time and your devotion. They acted as if you always had to attend every meeting and attend every activity. I asked myself what was the purpose of all this work. If I died right now they would replace me immediately. I sacrifice time from my family to make others successful in their organization. Work can be overwhelming and satisfying and the same time.
In today’s reading the author ask what does a person get from all of their work and efforts. It is a good question to consider since we spend much of our lives doing these tasks. You work hard to accomplish a goal and one day someone else will redo your work or change everything you accomplished. Is he saying that we should not work? Absolutely, not! What he is saying is our work is not what defines us, it is not our legacy.
Right now you might have a job you love. You might have a job you hate. Whatever you do you should work hard and work as if you are working for the Lord. However, our work should not control our lives. We must have a healthy balance and understanding. We must not let our jobs dictate our lives or our schedules. We work to accomplish a goal not to define who we are in this life or in heaven.
To work biblically means to be the best at what you do everyday. It means to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It means picking your family over your job. It means knowing that what you’re working for is not a paycheck but a testimony. Our work legacy will vanish soon after we die. The legacy we leave in our homes and for Christ will last forever.
So as you go to work today understand that your mission is to glorify Christ. It is to honor your family. Our jobs can’t rule our lives because if it does it will control our thoughts. Our jobs don’t define us now or in eternity. Our commitment to the Lord will.
