Harmony Is Good For All Involved

Today’s Reading, Psalms 133

Focal Scripture: Psalms 133:1 “How delightfully good when brothers live together in harmony!”

Being in harmony brings peace. This is true in a marriage, and it is true in friendships. One place that harmony is often overlooked is the local church. When there is no harmony in a place of worship, disaster is not far behind. I need to make it clear that harmony doesn’t mean you never disagree. Harmony means that even when there is disagreement over decisions, there is trust in the people making those decisions. Harmony happens when trust abounds.

In today’s reading, we see the truth of trust and harmony. This scripture tells us that it is delightfully good when brothers live together in harmony. Life is all about relationships, and when those relationships are strong and healthy, trust is built. Trust is built by people following through with their word, treating people fairly, and not having favorites. That type of relationship builds and fosters harmony. Especially when life gets difficult and troubles come.

If you have been around people who disrupt harmony, you understand what I am talking about immediately. The people who cause division usually have the following personality structure.

  1. They like to control and micromanage people.
  2. They gossip and talk about others behind their backs.
  3. They question people behind their backs (questioning someone to their face is trying to get clarification)
  4. They never admit their part in any act of miscommunication. ( They point the finger at others)

These individuals are exhausting and need to either get saved or be discipled in a major way. I have experienced people like this in the secular world and, unfortunately, in the church world.

To have biblical harmony, the following must take place

  1. You must be a born-again believer.
  2. The Holy Spirit must have control of your heart, mind, soul, and mouth.
  3. You must be aware that you’re not in control of anything
  4. People matter more than agendas and goals.

I have witnessed the damage that not having harmony causes to a lost and dying world. Believers must be the example of harmony even in the midst of disagreement. Harmony is about being mission-minded, not agenda-driven. I challenge you today to pursue biblical harmony and watch how it changes your life and witness.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Psalms 106-107
