He Knows Our Desires

Today’s Reading, Psalms 131, 138, 139, & 143-145

Focal Scripture: Psalms 145:19 “He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry for help and saves them.”

We all have desires in our lives. Sometimes these desires are good and beneficial. Other times, these desires are more self-centered. What truly matters is the heart behind the desire. That truth is what separates worldly wants from biblical wants in our lives. It reveals the character of our heart. I know that there have been times in my life where my desires seemed good but were not biblical. Every single time that I pursued them, it caused pain in my life and my family’s life.

In today’s reading, we see that the Lord fulfills the desires of those who fear him. He not only fulfills these desires but also hears their cry for help and saves them. The Lord cares about everyone, but he especially cares about those who seek after him and fear him biblically. Proverbs tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. That means the people who go after God with their entire heart, mind, and soul will have their desires fulfilled.

I need to make it abundantly clear that God is not going to give you every desire you have. For instance, if you desire a brand new truck, it doesn’t mean you will wake up tomorrow and have one in the driveway. What it does mean, though, is that the Lord may provide an opportunity for you to get a vehicle that meets your needs. God can fulfill our desires and do it without putting us in a precarious situation theologically. God meets needs and honors those who fear him.

The challenge I have for you today is to examine your view of God. Do you believe that the Lord is just a genie that gives you what you want? Or do you believe that the Lord will give you the desires of your heart, but do it perfectly and in his way? The answer to that question will expose your belief and your theology. It will determine how you pray and how you teach others about the Lord.

So what type of desires do you have currently? Are they biblical? Do they focus solely on you and your needs? If so, it is time to pursue the Lord and have him change your heart and mold it to be more like Christ.

When our hearts are more like his, the desires of our hearts will soon follow.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading 1 Chronicles 26-29 & Psalms 127
