Today’s Reading 1 Chronicles 6
Focal Scripture: 1 Chronicles 6:32 “They ministered with song in front of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem, and they performed their task according to the regulations given to them.”
Music is a ministry. Songs tell a story and are a vital part of ministry. For many people songs and music speak to them and prepare them for worship in ways that other modalities do not.
Here we see that music was used in front of the tent of meeting until Solomon built the Lord’s temple. They performed their task and did what was required of them. Their job did not just last a few days but over the course of years. They not only had to be proficient but purposeful.
As music mattered at this moment in biblical times, so it also matters today. I would argue that music is even more influential and powerful in our society than in the past. Especially when it comes to music that should minister to you and prepare you for worship.
I can’t emphasize enough the importance of the music that is sung and even where that music originates. There are many songs that are performed in churches today that come from questionable sources. The amazing part of this phenomenon is that most places would never do a Bible study from these sources but will sing their songs to prepare for worship.
Both avenues teach theology, one just comes with a tune. If music is a true ministry than the same standard that applies to biblical teaching should also apply to music. After all it’s the source of the product that matters not just the product itself.
My challenge to you today is to examine what you take in musically. Yes, it may sound good, be catchy but does it align with who God is biblically. Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s biblical.
