Today’s Reading, Proverbs 1-3
Focal Scripture: Proverbs 3:31-32 “Don’t envy a violent man or choose any of his ways; for the devious are detestable to the Lord, but he is a friend to the upright.”
We all know people who are angry or violent. This can be physically, verbally, emotionally or spiritually. The wisdom given here is not to envy people who behave like this. Solomon even goes on to say that that you should not choose any of their ways.
People like this are detestable to the Lord. They are devious and not trustworthy. They may win in the short term but are not people to emulate. These people are poor examples of what it means to have high character. Unfortunately, these people are often praised and even given passes for their behavior. This is why they don’t need to be envied. They do not have the heart of the Lord.
However, the Lord is a friend to the upright. These are people who have godly characteristics. They are not prone to anger, they do not talk about others. They have a heart to build people up and not tear them down. They are humble and meek. These will build friendship with God.
For the believer we must examine ourselves and see if we are a person who is not upright. Are we violent in actions, words, deeds, and intent? How do people speak of us and how we treat them? Our testimony matters.
I challenge you today if you are like this repent and submit your heart to God. If you see these actions taking place, stand up for what is right. Far too often people won’t address major issues because they envy the person who is doing wrong. As believers it is our responsibility to stand up for those who have been hurt.
Don’t envy these people who are detestable. Pursue God and watch what happens. Be different and strive to be upright. The testimony it leaves is far better than being violent to others.
