Today’s Reading, 2 Samuel 8-9 & 1 Chronicles 18
Focal Scripture: 2 Samuel 8:15 “So David reigned over all Israel, administering justice and righteousness for all his people.”
Leadership is difficult. Being a good leader is even more difficult. I have often seen people take the privilege to lead as an opportunity to be domineering and wield their power to further their personal agenda. True biblical leadership is one that is full of strength, humility, sacrifice, vision, and devotion to the Lord. This is why trying to lead like the world has no place in the Christian context. They are fundamentally at odds with one another. Obviously, you can learn anything from anyone. However, to lead biblically, it must have a biblical foundation.
In today’s reading, we see a great description of a biblical leader. David was a warrior. He went out into battle and came back victorious. When he made decisions, it was with justice and righteousness. Not just for the people he liked, but for all people. David was a man after God’s own heart. He was also a man who wanted to serve the people biblically and fairly.
So what about you? Do you lead biblically, or do you just lead? The difference is obvious, and the difference sets the stage for success in homes and organizations. The biggest part of biblical leadership is that it involves everyone, not just the people the leader likes or the people that goes along with their agenda. Just as David administered justice and righteousness to all people, so should we in our contexts.
I challenge you to lead by doing what is right at all times. No matter what it costs you personally. To be a biblical leader means that you must have high standards for yourself and others. It means you will be fair and consistent. It also means that your leadership seeks to build up, not tear down.
It is time that believers who are in leadership positions be held to this standard. The bare minimum is to have the fruit of the Spirit in your life. That will help you lead biblically, and it will help you lead faithfully. Good leadership is possible when it is guided by the Lord and not the world.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading Psalms 50, 53, 60, 75
