Today’s Reading, Proverbs 16-18
Focal Scripture: Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.”
When I was little we would play a game where we would throw pinecones at one another. We would divide up into teams and each group would have a fort, sometimes we would build a tower. The goal of the game was to capture the other team’s tower or knock it down by using the pinecones. Sometimes this game would last for hours especially in the fall when we had leaves and the weather was cooler. The only time it ended earlier is when someone decided to get a new pinecone that had the sharp edges and launch it at someone’s head.
In our reading today Solomon tells us that the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous run to it and are protected. Unlike, the towers we would build as kids the Lord’s tower is strong and unable to be destroyed. Solomon wants his son to know that when things get difficult he needs to run to the Lord. He also wants him to know that the Lord doesn’t move and he protects those who come to him earnestly.
So what about you today? Do you view the Lord as a strong tower? Do you see him as home base? Unlike the forts when I was a kid I don’t have to protect it because the Lord is gracious and powerful. The tower of the Lord is a beacon. It is a fortress that gives security to those who need it in their lives.
What are you going through today that is keeping you from running to the Lord? To often in our lives we look to others for help when we should be running to the Lord. Notice here that the name of the Lord is a strong tower. His name carries weight and prestige. His name should be on our lips when we speak to others and when we pray about his glorious wonders.
If you need protection today from issues in your life run to the Lord. It doesn’t mean you won’t face battles but it does mean you will have a place to rest in the middle of that battle. It’s time that believers ran more to the Lord whose name is a strong tower than anywhere else.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading Proverbs 19-21
