We Are Responsible For Our Sin

Today’s Reading, Ezekiel 18-20

Focal Scripture: Ezekiel 18:20 “The person who sins is the one who will die. A son won’t suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity, and a father won’t suffer punishment for the son’s iniquity. The righteousness of the righteous person will be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked person will be on him.”

Taking ownership of what you done is extremely important. If you make a mistake it is best to say you made that mistake and learn from it so you can get better. Unfortunately, when most people mess up they look for excuses or they try to blame other people. I am not perfect at it but in my own life if I make a mistake I will own it completely. Why? Because I don’t believe that failure and mistakes are a bad thing to experience. I believe that you learn more from trying and failing than you do from making excuses about why something didn’t happen.

In today’s reading we are reminded that we don’t need to make excuses for our sin either. We are responsible for our sin in our lives. Nobody will be held accountable for our actions or our thoughts except for us personally. Sin requires much and as individuals it requires our own personal death. This verse is a stark reminder that you can’t blame others for your sin. It also reminds you that you can’t help others not be responsible for their own sin either.

Why is this topic so important? Because many people will make excuses or blame others for their actions. I can honestly say I cam see other people standing before Jesus and blaming everyone and everything else concerning their sin. One time I had a conversation with someone about their sin and they would say this is the way God made me and they were not going to change. Imagine blaming God for the sins you commit. Imagine blaming him because you chose disobedience over righteousness.

The challenge we all have when it comes to sin is to make sure we own it and call it out by name. We also must understand that sin requires our death, personally. The only way sin doesn’t defeat us is because of Jesus. He is greater than our sin. To become a believer we have to confess that we are sinners. Then we believe that Jesus is the only way to have our sins forgiven because of his perfect sacrifice.

Even though we deserve death God has provided a way out. We just have to admit we are a sinner and not try to make excuses for our actions. So what about you? Have you taken ownership of your sin? Or do you blame others? Remember we will be held responsible if we don’t have our faith placed in Christ.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading Ezekiel 21-22
