Today’s Reading, Psalms 51-57
Focal Scripture: Psalms 51:10-11 “God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.”
The feel of dirt on your body for a long period of time is irritating to your skin and your senses. When it sits, it begins to dry and leave an odor where everyone can smell it, that is around you. Especially, those who are clean. If you have ever been around people who are not clean you know the smell very well. It is not a smell you will forget anytime in your life.
In today’s reading we see David declare his need to have a clean heart after the egregious sins he has committed. He had a very real moment with the prophet of God who called him out and he came to his senses. He understood his heart needed to be clean and needed to be renewed. He was concerned that God would banish him from his presence and take the spirit away from his life. David was desperate to be clean no matter what it would take.
As believers we do not need to move too far from these words. Just like David we commit sin, just like David we have a choice to make on how we will respond. Our sin should break us and it should bring us to a place where we are asking God to work in our hearts. If you are a believer we know all of our sins are forgiven past, present and future. However, we still commit sin and need to be washed off. We need to root out the cause of our sin and give it to Jesus.
We should ask God when we struggle with sin to give us a spirit that is renewed to follow him with passion and focus. Thankfully, we know that the Holy Spirit will never leave us or forsake us in our lives. We know that he is always with us doing great work to make us more like Jesus.
I challenge you today to be honest with your sin. Tell God what you have done as a believer and ask him to cleanse you and give you the power through the Holy Spirit to turn from it and surrender to him. None of us are immune from sin after we get saved. Our goal is to root it out when we see it raise up in our lives. This can’t be done in our own strength but it can be done by the Holy Spirit.
We must pray for a clean heart and Gods presence.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading Psalms 58-65
