Following Jesus Is Hard

Today’s Reading, John 5-6

Focal Scripture: John 6:60 “Therefore, when many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept it?”

Have you done anything that was difficult to accomplish? I have and those difficult things were worth it in the long run. I remember when I was training for a Marathon years ago. It was grueling and rewarding. It was exhilarating and exhausting. However, it was well worth it in the end. It was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I learned much about myself and how to push my mind beyond what is normal.

In today’s reading we come to the realization that following Jesus is difficult. It is actually the hardest journey a person can embark on in life. Jesus teachings are difficult to follow. The radical obedience that it takes to be a follower of Christ is unmatched. Being his disciple will cost you everything, as it should.

The good news is that to become a follower it all depends on Jesus. His work, his death, and his resurrection. We put our faith in him and he takes care of our salvation. We must know our salvation doesn’t rest in us or because of us. It rests in the finished work of Christ.

Therefore, we must count the cost of following Jesus. We must ask ourselves are we truly committed to Jesus or am I just a fan. I encourage you to ask that question today. Giving up your wants and desires can be hard. Following Jesus is hard but worth it in every area of your life.

If you’re on the fence about following Jesus know it is more than worth it to be a disciple. He gives grace and he gives guidance. The reward is worth the sacrifice. Jesus will give us what we need to endure.

Follow him today.

Tomorrow I plan on reading John 7-8
