Today’s Reading, Psalm 78-79
Focal Scripture: Psalms 78:8 “Then they would not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not loyal and whose spirit was not faithful to God.”
In Psalm 78 we get a history lesson about the nation of Israel. Some of it was positive and some was negative. However, much of it was about learning from the mistakes of previous generations. This skill is often not taught or encouraged.
I call it a skill because many people don’t learn how to take others failures and apply it to their own personal life. Here we see that the writer is telling his readers to not be like the previous generations. Don’t be hard hearted. Don’t be rebellious against God’s statutes. Don’t live your life for yourself.
He even goes a step further and tells them that their hearts were not loyal. They continually worshipped other gods and idols. Finally, the writer explains that their spirit was not faithful to God. In other words they were not all in with their worship.
So the application today is straightforward. Do you learn from the mistakes of others around you? Especially the spiritual mistakes that cause pain and heartache. If more believers would take wisdom from the Bible and those who live godly lifestyles our lives would be more fruitful.
The main takeaway is how often do we worship other gods. After all this was the main problem with the children of Israel. They knew what was right but traded in Gods design for their own desires.
Let us learn from godly people around us so we can be faithful and apply biblical lessons. Let it be said of us that our generation demonstrated faith and confidence in the Lord.
Tomorrow I plan on reading Psalms 80-85
