Seek The Lord Before Anything Else

Today’s Reading, 2 Samuel 1-3

Focal Scripture: 2 Samuel 2:1 “Some time later, David inquired of the Lord: “Should I go to one of the towns of Judah?” The Lord answered him, “Go.” Then David asked, “Where should I go?” “To Hebron,” the Lord replied.”

Who do you go to when you need answers to questions? I am not talking about big questions but the mundane and simple choices in your life. I know personally I don’t always require of the Lord before I make every decision in my life. Especially, if I think it is a simple decision.

However, in our reading today David demonstrates a true prayerful heart. He was just deciding if he should go to a certain town but before he did he sought the Lords advice. Then when the Lord told him to go he asked which town specifically. He was then given a specific place. It amazes me how in tune with God David was at this moment. Nothing was outside of Gods purview in his life. He couldn’t get enough of God’s wisdom.

The challenge for us from this scripture is two fold. First, do we have a prayerful heart like David when it comes to every decision that we will face in life. Second, if we do will we be obedient and do what we are asked to do by the Lord. It takes much humility to submit every decision to another person. Make no doubt David is showing spiritual maturity on a grand scale.

However, we need to be showing the same spiritual maturity. Our hearts should always be in prayer. Nothing should be decided on our own but it should be decided by prayer and petition before the Lord. I once served on staff with a pastor that would be slow to make decisions because he had to pray about everything first. To be honest it would frustrate me because sometimes so viewed the decision as easy and settled.

Thankfully, this man showed great leadership and modeled that prayer must come before any decision even the small ones. Looking back I should have appreciated this heart more when I served with him. He always prayed and humbled himself before the Lord. He demonstrated great leadership and was not moved by the opinions of others.

He demonstrated seeking the Lord above everything else. After all the purpose of the Christian walk is to be more dependent on God not less. So today let us apply this truth to our daily lives.

Tomorrow, I plan on reading 2 Samuel 4-7
