Today’s Reading, Acts 13-15
Focal Scripture: Acts 13:2-3 “As they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after they had fasted, prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them off.”
Have you ever been shopping and found something that you really like? Maybe it was a piece of furniture of the last piece of clothing in the size you wear. What do you do when you find it and need a minute to make a decision or come back to it later? You might be one that hides it in the store. Maybe you give it to the clerk to hold for you until later. Or you could have them place a letter on it with your name. You are doing this because you have chosen that item and have set it apart from the rest.
In today’s reading we see that the Lord set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work of the Lord. They were chosen to preach the gospel, start churches, build up the saints, and correct bad theology. They were prayed for, commissioned and sent out to do the Lord’s work. Being set apart for this mission had to be exciting but also scary. The great thing is that they were filled with the Spirit and supported by their fellow believers. God had a plan for their life.
God also has a plan for your life. You may not be set apart for vocational ministry like Saul and Barnabas. However, you are set apart to be light in the darkness and have a faith that gets others attention. Being set apart means different things in Christendom. We all are set apart to be disciples. We are all set apart to share our faith. We are all set apart to live radically different. So if you are struggling with the direction of your life take heart that God has given you direction already.
Being set apart is a great realization. Known that you have been chosen is even better. Realizing your purpose in Christ gives you peace. I encourage you to take confidence in Gods choice of you to speak on his behalf. He has set you apart for his mission.
If you ever doubt that you have a purpose know that God has given you one. He has set you apart.
Tomorrow I plan on reading Acts 16-17
